Joshua Citarella
Joshua Citarella is an artist and internet culture writer based in NYC. He is the host of 'Doomscroll', a podcast that explores online culture and politics in the 21st century and the founder of 'Do Not Research' (a non-profit arts organization) and a graduate professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has taught at the School of Visual Arts (2018-19) and served as an outside advisor at Carnegie Mellon University (2020) and Tufts University (2021).
Citarella's work is included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum, Netherlands and the Hood Museum of Art in the U.S. His publications are included in the libraries of the School of Visual Art, Yale University, Harvard University and Fleet Library at the RISD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the New Museum book store, among others.
Artist Joshua Citarella rose to prominence making lens-based work as part of the early 2010s post-internet movement. Today, he continues to exhibit in galleries and museums, but his practice also takes nontraditional forms. He produces a podcast and writes a newsletter that examines online political subcultures. He streams on Twitch and recently designed a card game, Class Fantasy, inspired by the overlaps between role-playing games (RPG) and politics. His 'Do Not Research' Discord channel serves as a hub for lively community exchanges about related topics. Citarella’s pivot to content creation is more than just a way to monetize his practice; it is also a class-conscious effort to build alternative art institutions. Citarella is a hyper-proficient artist of today who works with both materials and software. His work positions photography at the nexus of an interdisciplinary practice, relegating all mediums to source material for digital image capture.
