UV print on sauna insulation board 120x60x4cm 2020

In the three works composing “Sobriety Series”, Karilampi wanted to tell a story about music and sobriety through the diverse graphic design found on the memorabilia of the 12-steps programs. The design guidelines for 12-steps events is completely de-centralised, so the style of the key rings, posters and logos is totally different each year; almost like an open-source approach aimed at a greater purpose. In reference to the Finnish and Baltic sauna culture, the resulting collages are UV printed onto silver insulation boards that normally line the insides of the walls in saunas. The pre-existing commercial logos and text printed on the boards make up part of the work, shining through the images layered on top and adding an extra dimension. Each of the three works delivers its own atmosphere: a smooth Los Angeles plant-based rehab; a more hardcore early 90s Japanese-American piece; and a self-portrait of the artist and his friend treated with an After Effects filter.
