Sirja-Liisa Eelma

Sirja-Liisa Eelma (b. 1973) is a conceptual painter whose visual language is characterized by visually minimalistic structures. In her artwork, Eelma focuses on the themes of emptiness, silence, absence of meanings, experiencing pause and defining the visible and the invisible. The artist's creative practice is based on the concurrence of the chronological factor and the spatial context; her artwork embodies introspection and meditative peace.
Sirja-Liisa Eelma (b. 1973) has graduated from the department of painting at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) in 1996. Since 2018, she has been studying in the doctoral school of the Estonian Academy of Arts and currently works as a visiting associate professor in the department of painting at the Estonian Academy of Arts. In 2016, Eelma was awarded the Konrad Mägi Prize; her painting series "To Write One's / Your Name" was nominated for the AkzoNobel art award in 2021; in 2023 she received the Kristjan Raud Art Award, the oldest art prize in Estonia. Her works belong to the collections of Art Museum of Estonia, Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Desing as well private collections. Eelma has presented her work at numerous solo, group and curatorial exhibitions both in Estonia and internationally.
