Johanna Ulfsak

Johanna Ulfsak, born in Tallinn in 1987, is a textile artist and designer. She holds a Master’s degree in Textile Design from the Kolding School of Design in Denmark and she further refined her skills at Kawashima Textile School in Japan, where she mastered Kasuri weaving and traditional plant dyeing techniques. Following her academic pursuits, Ulfsak gained practical experience in the textile industry in Switzerland, Germany and Estonia.

Ulfsak’s artistic practice predominantly revolves around traditional weaving and slow craft techniques, creating objects, art pieces, and large-scale fabrics that transcend conventional boundaries between disciplines like contemporary art, traditional textiles, crafts, and design. By redefining these positions, she explores existing connections and establishes novel ones that link objects and storytelling, highlights contrasts between materials, and harmonises form and content.

Working alongside friends, artists, and artisans, she has continually expanded her practice into new directions and mediums, from video art to woodwork and painting.

Ulfsak’s work has been shown at, among others Temnikova Kasela in Tallinn (2025), Modernat Museum Malmö (2024), Draakon Gallery in Tallinn (2024), Margot Samel Gallery in New York (2024), Tartu Art Museum (2024), Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design (2022), Tallinn Art Hall’s Lasnamäe Pavilion (2022), curated section of the Collectible Design Fair in Brussels (2022), Galerie Meyer Kainer in Vienna (2020, Espoo Museum of Modern Art (2019) and OVERDUIN & CO, LA (2016).

From 2025 she is a laureat of honorable artists salary given by the Estonia Ministry of Culture. From 2020 she has been a guest lecturer at Estonian Academy of Arts. Ulfsaks works are a part of the public collection of the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design. She is a member of Estonian Artists Association and Estonian Textile Artists Association.
